David Mitchell |
Fellow lawyer |
September 18, 2012 |
Perhaps I am the only person who attended the wonderful Memorial Service who knew David in two capacities. In the summer of 1970 my wife and I met David when he was a carpenter working for Jeff Ferguson on a remodeling at our first house in Palo Alto. At the time I had already been a tax/estate planning lawyer for ten years.
Later I knew David professionally--where I was much better at judging his work than I was at looking at carpentry. He was an excellent lawyer, always interesting to talk to and I regarded him as great member of the profession. I was supposed to call him and have a meal together and talk about cutting back--but it never got done, to my great regret.

I well remember the river slideshows that David gave at my travel bookstore, known as Phileas Fogg's Books, Maps & More for the Traveler at the Stanford Shopping Center in Palo Alto. I also have fond memories of attending the Telluride Film (Festival) about Water with David and friends some years ago.
As Chair of the Board of the Page Mill Y, I am well aware of all the goodness that David brought to the YMCAs of the Silicon
Valley Association. His volunteer work had a profound impact, especially on the Page Mill and East Palo Alto Y's.
I am sorry to miss his memorial, as I will be away. I extend my condolences and best wishes to his family and friends.
Aloha,
Fred

David was a Lincoln High School classmate of mine. We shared a lot of memories and good times together...and always liked to reminise at our reunions. What a meaningful and exciting life he has lived since high school. My husband, Len, and I send our thoughts and prayers to the Hettig family.
